Advanced Open Water Diver
Adventure doesn’t stop at sixty feet…
Take your diving to the next level with five adventure dives designed to expand your skills, confidence, and underwater comfort. Students can choose from a variety of elective dives including:
Deep Dive (Required), Underwater Navigation (Required), Fish Identification, Night Dive, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Search and Recovery, Underwater Naturalist, Wreck Dive, Delayed Surface Maker Buoy, or Rescue Dives!
Before heading into the water, you’ll complete the PADI or SDI Advanced Open Water Diver eLearning online to build the foundation for your specialty dives.
Day one of the course takes place at Lake Hydra in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania — a flooded quarry filled with underwater attractions including planes, trucks, boats, and even helicopters — where you’ll complete your required Deep Dive and additional electives.
For day two, students can choose between returning to Lake Hydra or diving the ocean at Fort Wetherill in Rhode Island, giving you the opportunity to tailor the course to the type of diving that interests you most.
Course Prerequisites
PADI or SDI Open Water Diver certification
(or equivalent from another agency)
Minimum age of 15
Divers aged 12–14 can enroll and earn a Junior Advanced Open Water Diver certification, then upgrade once they turn 15.
All Adventure Dives that go deeper than 18 m/60 ft require participants to be at least 15.Complete Paperwork
Continuing Education Administrative Form and Diver Medical Form
Gear Requirements
Personal gear: Students must bring or purchase their own dive mask, snorkel, and dive boots — these items are highly personal for fit and comfort. We offer a student gear package which includes a mask, snorkel, boots, and fins that are yours to keep after certification. Contact us for more details.
Provided gear: All other equipment is included (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins, tanks, weights).

Divers are responsible for arranging their own accommodations and purchasing Lake Hydra passes—both available at https://www.lakehydra.com/.
